Durnford could well be up for a run in the 2013 Adelaide Cup, should he perform to his best in the 2013 Mornington Cup later this month.
The Helenus gelding won his last start in the Listed Mornington Cup Prelude in front of Tuscan Fire, who himself is being aimed at the 2013 Adelaide Cup.
Durnford is attempting to gain ballot exemption for the 2013 Caulfield Cup with his Mornington Cup run, however, in the short term may find himself running in the 2013 Adelaide Cup.
Trainer Pat Carey is confident that Durnford will be at his best for the remainder of the autumn racing carnival.
”Of all the Helenuses I’ve had, he’s probably been the slowest to get going, but now that he’s hit his straps, he should have a bright future,” Carey said.
Durnford’s future is bright now that he has scored his first win for 2013 in the Mornington Cup Prelude.
”We needed his ratings to come up a little and the best way for that to happen is to win races like this, but I always thought this was within his grasp,” Carey said.
”It was a good race with a bit of depth and when he was asked to go, he was very strong to the line. I’ve won a Mornington Cup and I’ve been narrowly beaten as well, but Durnford shapes up as a horse that would relish the 2400 metres.”
