Adelaide Cup Form Not Ideal For Black Tycoon

March 10th, 2014

Trainer Justin Warwick admits that the 2014 Adelaide Cup lead-up form of Black Tycoon has not been ideal, but he is hoping that his star galloper can produce an improved effort in the Group 2 event this weekend.

Black Tycoon produced the best performance of his career to win the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot on New’s Year Day and was immediately set for a tilt at the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m).

The Blackfriars gelding failed to fire in his next two race starts, finishing fourth in the Listed Detonator Stakes (1800m) and seventh in the Listed AHA Cup (2019m) at Bunbury, and his Adelaide Cup chances received a setback when he was allocated the top weight of 59kg and drew barrier 15.

Warwick admits that it would take a very special effort from Black Tycoon to win the Adelaide Cup, but is a happy to have a crack at the Group 2 race that is worth an impressive $400,000 in total prizemoney.

“There’s not much we can do about it, I can’t control barriers and I can’t control weight,” Warwick told News Limited.

“Of course, I would have liked less weight and a better gate, but it’s just the way it is.

“It’s always hard when you’re campaigning on interstate soil, but we’re having a crack at the stumps.

“I’m not too concerned about the distance, the weight is the biggest worry.”

Black Tycoon will be racing outside Western Australia for the first time in his racing career and started what has been a lengthy campaign in September last year with a fourth place finish in the Listed Farnley Stakes (1400m).

The eight-year-old missed the placings in the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m), Listed Northam Cup (1600m) and Ascot Gold Cup before returning to the winners’ stall with a narrow win in the Listed Tattersall’s Cup.

He was far from disgraced when seventh in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) and fourth in the Cox Stakes (2100m) before taking out the Perth Cup in spectacular fashion; with jockey Damien Oliver weaving a path through the field.

Black Tycoon is currently available at 2014 Adelaide Cup odds of $17; with Cooldini ($3.20) currently a narrow favourite from Big Memory ($3.30).
