British import Renew, who capped off his first campaign in Australia with victory in the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) back in November, will be aimed towards the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 9.
The 2015 Adelaide Cup is one of only a few remaining two mile races left on the Australian racing calendar. As such it will be made Renew’s target race for the autumn.
Renew travelled to Australia under the care of British trainer Marco Botti in October, running second last in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) on debut.
The gelding was transferred to the care of Archie Alexander following the disappointing result before running the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). He was badly checked in the early stages of the race which caused him to finish third last. He turned it around to finish runner-up in the Visit Victoria Plate (2800m) just a nose off Grand Marshal before winning the Sandown Cup.
Renew has taken his time returning to peak fitness level following a spell but has hit his stride lately.
“In his first couple of weeks he was a little bit rusty but now that we’ve got him going he’s moving pretty well,” Alexander told Sky Racing.
“He’ll have a few options at the end of the month and the beginning of February with all roads leading towards the Adelaide Cup.”
Renew is the star of Alexander’s emerging stable but the trainer is set to receive some more OTI imports before too long that will increase his winning statistics in the autumn.
“I’ve got a few others that are coming on the next plane from England,” Alexander said.
“A nice Galileo horse, that is Coolmore bred, was with Aidan O’Brien then went to Luca Cumani, called Sir Walter Scott and a nice Monsun coming from France owned by Michael Watt.
“There’s a bit of talent there and hopefully we can win a few races with them.”
