2015 Adelaide Cup the Likely Target for Averau

January 13th, 2015

Initially outlining a plan to contest the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) in Tasmania in February, trainers Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison have revealed classy five-year-old Averau will instead remaining on the Australian mainland to target the featured Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 9th.

Arguably returning to racing in career-best form this time in, Averau finished a close second to renowned stayer Cadillac Mountain in the Listed Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (2635m) on December 14th and was last seen at the races on New Year’s Day; displaying an exceptional turn of foot late to comfortably take out the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) by close to four lengths at Flemington Racecourse.

Understandably pleased with the recent form and class displayed by the daughter of Stratum, Widdison told Racing Victoria the flight to Tasmania was of concern to the team, leading to their decision to instead target the 2015 Adelaide Cup.

“She’s not a great traveller and we’re pretty worried about the flight,” Widdison said.

“We also think she’ll have no problems running two miles (3200m).

“There’s a Listed race at Moonee Valley two and a bit weeks before it which will probably be her final lead-up run and then before that we may give her a run over 2000 if she needs it.”

A proven performer over the Morphettville running surface having placed a credible fifth in the Group 3 South Australian Fillies Classic (2500m) during the autumn of 2013, Averau ran sixth in a minor over 1400m first-up this time; progressing to fifth in the Quest Moonee Valley FM (1600m) on September 6th before returning to the winner’s circle in the Mitchelton Wins BM64 (2040m) on October 5th.

Unlucky to be blocked for a run late when fifth in the Jordans Cereals Bowl (2400m) on October 15th, the mare out of Merayaat claimed back-to-back victories in the Sweeney Estate Agents BM78 (2500m) and Adapt Australia BM78 (2500m) in her only other starts prior to the Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap.
