This afternoon in South Australia the event behind today’s public holiday lights up Morphettville Racecourse with the Adelaide Cup 2015 taking centre stage.
Due to jump at 4:00pm (local time) as Morphettville Race 7, this year’s $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) originally attracted a final field of 15 stayers for the two mile classic.
The line-up is now down to 14 with Gossip Girl scratched from the field, Adelaide Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au led by Darren Weir’s last start Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) winning Victorian visitor Taiyoo at $4.20.
Taiyoo has the ideal lead-up form with the Lord Reims his fifth straight win, however he has a wide barrier 13 draw and the 59kg top weight to overcome to continue the winning streak here.
In the Adelaide Cup odds the biggest dangers to the favourite are tipped as market mover Lucky Lucky Lucky ($4.80) coming off a Lord Reims Stakes second, last year’s Sandown Cup winner Renew ($5) and the Peter Moody-trained Crime Fighter ($7.50).
So will the favourite salute for the punters this afternoon or is there an upset Adelaide Cup result on the cards?
#3 Renew ($5)
Barrier two, Chris Symons and 55kg for the Archie Alexander-trained European import who is proven over the distance. Has and set for this race. Being able to see out the two miles is of course key in a traditional Cup race so the fact this Dansili gelding won the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Sandown in the spring bodes well. Last start ran sixth when three lengths off this afternoon’s favourite Taiyoo in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley but will be improving off that. Drops from 58.5kg to 55kg and gets the extra metres to eat up here, plus usually does well when seasoned after a few runs in so timing is right.
#5 Lucky Lucky Lucky ($4.80)
Tony McEvoy-trained gelding has the local advantage here over a host of well fancied interstate raiders. The Lucky Owners five-year-old is the market mover with some steady money coming after he was defeated under half a length by Taiyoo in the Lord Reims Stakes last time out. That was his fourth top three run on the trot, the five-time winner having had two starts at the track for two seconds. Has only won up to 2200m before, but he drops two kilos to the minimum and has ace hoop Kerrin McEvoy on for this.
#1 Taiyoo ($4.20)
Race favourite but has the 59kg to overcome. Drawn wide, but time to make up any ground with two miles to run. Is one kilo down from the 60kg he bravely carried to victory in the Lord Reims Stakes, which has proved the Adelaide Cup form line to follow many years. Is on the drift in betting out from $3.60, so if you fancy the favourite the value is there. Ultra-consistent with five wins on the trot leading into this, so can’t fault the form.
