Eight-year-old gelding Tanby returned to winning form on Monday afternoon, winning the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville. His connections were confident the gelding could run the two mile trip and he just got there in the closing moments of the race, winning a nose ahead of Taiyoo on the line with Renew a further half a length by a long head away in third.
Tanby’s last win came in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) back in November 2012, which was 20 starts ago. The gelding jumped from barrier eight with Dean Holland, carrying the minimum weight of 53kg.
Taiyoo was first to leave the gates with Tanby rounding out the lead pack. Coming into the first straight Tanby led narrowly while Vima took up the front running not long after, not happy with the speed set by the leaders.
Vima went for home and shot away rounding the final turn, leading by two or three lengths, while Taiyoo took up the running around the outside. The headliner joined in the race quickly and got in the clear. He was only caught by Tamby in the final stride, driving at him and nailing the win right on the line.
The weights ultimately proved the decider of the 2015 Adelaide Cup with Tanby enjoying six kilograms less than top weighted Taiyoo.
Mick Cerchi took over the training of the eight-year-old gelding at the end of autumn last year and was thrilled with the long-awaited win from Tanby, who has enjoyed runner-up finishes in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) and Rain Lover Handicap (2500m) this year.
“We knew he’d run the journey out, everything just went to plan,” the trainer said.
“It was great for the people that have supported us in Bulla Thoroughbeds.
“I don’t think you can feel confident in the Adelaide Cup, you just come here and hope you can do your best. We just got the horse as good as we could get him and as sound as we could get him.”
Cerchi had plenty of praise for Holland, who delivered the winning ride.
“Everything just worked out perfect,” Holland said.
“He just travelled so soft throughout and I always had a lap full throughout.
“Taiyoo is a bloody hard horse to get past and at the top of the straight I thought I had the horse, but I wasn’t sure if I won on the line but thank god I did.
“It was just a good tough effort and a great training performance by Mick.
“He had him spot-on for today.”
Punters who backed Tanby to win the 2015 Adelaide Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au enjoyed a lucrative payout of $15.
