Trainer Ken Keys has been pleased with the condition of Like A Carousel through recent weeks, and is hopeful a return to two miles will mean a return to the winner’s circle for the talented stayer in Monday’s featured 2016 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville.
Like A Carousel has capped each of his five most-recent preparations with a run at two miles and has heralded a number of commendable results; running second in the Listed Sandown Cup twice and third in the most recent edition of the Group 1 Sydney Cup in 2015.
Having found competitive condition via two competitive starts this time, Keys is confident the Helike gelding is up to the class of the 2016 Adelaide Cup and will relish a return to two miles for the first time this preparation.
“His recent starts have been too short in distance for him and his fitness was still on the way up,” Keys told Racing Victoria.
“Hopefully he has done enough now and will be right for the weekend.
“He looks like he is fit and ready, although we’ve done it a bit different this year and he hasn’t had as much racing so hopefully we’ve done enough with him.
“Without a doubt he’s at his best over this distance. There are obviously a couple of standout favourites, but a lot aren’t proven over 3200m – and we are.
“The favourites might be hard to beat, but we’re hoping to not be far off.
“Over 3200m, we’re looking for him to be running at the back of the placings and hoping for even better.”
Keys revealed another attempt at the Sydney Cup on Day 2 of The Championships will figure as the major target for Like A Carousel should he come through his run in the Adelaide Cup well.
“The plan is to head to Sydney Cup, so hopefully that transpires. He was third in the race last year so why not have another crack at it?” Keys added.
Like A Carousel has been a strong and consistent performer for Keys through his entire racing career; posting a commendable two wins and ten minors through 35 starts.
